Abstract

Purdue University's Management and Economics (M&E) Library previously offered user instruction primarily through first-week orientation sessions and occasional course-specific lectures, which proved inadequate in long-term skill retention and reach. In response, a comprehensive revision was implemented in the spring of 1997, integrated into the redesigned MGMT 301 courseā€”a mandatory class for undergraduate Management students. The new approach included a three-tiered instructional program targeting beginner to intermediate information research skills. The library module, comprising online tutorials (PLUTO), in-class lectures, hands-on database sessions, assignments, and evaluations, designed to provide practical research skills using a focus on company information. While the overall response was positive, students favored the hands-on components over the online tutorial. Adjustments based on student feedback were planned for subsequent semesters to enhance the effectiveness of the program. By integrating this module into MGMT 301, the M&E Library achieved a significant step towards comprehensive, mandatory information literacy education for all upper-division Management students.
