The author details the effort to build a snow-free route to the Coast and how it ruined five railroad companies. The book covers the construction of what were originally the Missouri and Central Divisions of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the takeover by the Santa Fe, and the emergence of the independent Frisco.
