Editorial Review From Library Journal : Iorio (communications, Wichita State Univ.) presents a unique look at the Mennonites of Oklahoma. This group arrived in America around 1893 and took part in the Cherokee Outlet land rush of that year. Though not communal, they have remained a recognizable community for over a century. Aiming to present the culture as seen by its members, Iorio conducted over 60 in-depth interviews in search of the group's self-interpretation. She divides the book into three periods: before, during, and after World War I. The war was especially important, since it was then that the Mennonites' pacifism and German heritage became major issues. Every chapter concludes with vivid first-hand accounts, written by those who lived in the era presented, which paint compelling pictures of hardship, friendship, persecution, and faith. An insightful look at the history of these people as they themselves understand it. Robert Nixon, Lafayette, IN Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.
