This study investigates the relationship between ways of knowing and open mindedness to diversity utilizing an open-ended, qualitative process. The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a relationship between ways of knowing, SK and CK, and the nature of people's interpretation of an open-ended task related to high school students. There were 78 undergraduate participants from a Midwestern university ranging in age from 19-48 years of age. Participants completed the Attitudes Toward Thinking and Learning Survey (ATTLS) (Galotti, Clinchy, Ainsworth, Lavin, & Mansfield, 1999), an open-ended news reporting scenario that was created by the researcher and some demographic questions. One-way ANOVAS were conducted to find significant relationships between the data. A significant relationship was found between separate knowing and the dichotomous scene coding.
