Abstract
Etzanoa (14CO3), a Great Bend Aspect site located along the confluence of the Arkansas and Walnut rivers in south-central Kansas, was occupied by the ancestral Wichita around A.D. 1450-1700. This preliminary study utilizes non-diagnostic lithic assemblages from the 14CO3 2016-2019 field seasons to investigate the possibility of formal trade networks through evaluation of material type, quarry location, and lithic quantity. The investigation will be executed through comparative analysis of non-diagnostic lithics: typological assessment, raw material identification, and artifact density. Once data has been generated, a larger investigation into surrounding quarry and workshop locations will be employed to ascertain methods of lithic collection. This preliminary data provides insights into the utilization of and dependency on local lithic resources by ancestral Wichita peoples, and potentially improves understanding of Etzanoa's lithic economy.
