Abstract
Table of Contents
This book is the first comprehensive history of the oil and gas industry in Kansas from its beginnings to the present day. Drawing largely upon previously unresearched materials and personal interviews, it portrays the physical and human drama of exploration, technical innovation, financial surprise and government regulation against the exciting backdrop of such unique events as the discovery of the El Dorado and Fairport fields, the struggle against the Standard Oil, the booming of towns with new found gas, and the growing awareness of Kansans of the effect of national and international politics. Since oil and gas have long been one of the state's major industries, the history of Kansas energy adds a great deal to understanding of the character of the state in all its endeavors. Also an awareness of the long history of some current items of concern regarding energy should lead to better decisions about the future of this critical resource. Finally, the story of Kansas oil and gas, presented without distortion, has an intrinsic interest even a romance about it, which a writer of good fiction would be hard pressed to duplicate.
