Abstract

This work fills a gaping hole in our knowledge of Russian history as well as all of Northeast Asian history. It is the collaborative work of Robert Cribb and Li Narangoa, director of the Mongolia Studies Centre, both of the Australian National University. The title implies an admittedly important collection of maps, and it provides that superbly: nearly eighty four-colored political maps with basic physical geographical information provide what is promised and would be expected in a volume such as this. The atlas is particularly designed to be accessible for Western readers. The authors have used long-established spellings and names used in the West where appropriate, while using the spellings and names used by the ruling governments during a specific time frame. These decisions will be particularly useful to scholars and students alike.
