Abstract
The first step in the evaluation of geometric characteristics is to establish the related datums. Correct establishment of datums is vital to the accurate evaluation of related geometric errors. ASME Y14.5.1M-1994 standard specifies a procedure for the establishment of candidate datum set for a nominally flat datum feature. Implementation of this procedure is not a trivial task. In this paper, an efficient and accurate algorithm for the implementation of the above-mentioned procedure is presented. The algorithm has been implemented and is evaluated for its ability to provide accurate results quickly. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
