Description
First page of text on America in volume 11, the New World, of Joan Blaeu's Atlas Maior (Grand Atlas), Amsterdam, 1662, on page 1. The Latin text deals with such topics as the meaning of the name America, the history of European discovery, and the first Western European encounter with the New World. Complete original title of the atlas was Theatrum Orbus Terrarum, sive, Atlas Novus (Theatre of the World, or, New Atlas), with the latter phrase changed to Atlas Maior (Grand Atlas) in 1662. Started by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) and completed by his son Joan Blaeu (1596-1673). By 1662 the atlas had expanded to 11 or 12 volumes, depending on the edition, and included maps from previous editions.
