Abstract
A novel mechanical test capable of measuring the flow stress within an adiabatic shear band is described. The test is validated numerically via high resolution finite element analysis. It is shown that a controllable, planar shear zone may be produced by the test, where the effective strain may be as high as 10, the effective strain rate as high as 106 /s, and the temperature as high as near melting. The test can be used for development of constitutive models that may be utilized as inputs for the modeling of severe deformation processes, including machining.
