Abstract

This thesis is presented as an attempt to integrate a personal philosophy of art with some of the aesthetic premises held by philosophers, artists, and aestheticians of the past, in order to find some meaning in the activity of art and its relevance to contemporary life. The aim of this paper is neither historical nor scientific, both being disciplines out of the immediate range of my experience and learning. The material brought forth will be relevant in so far as it sustains or refutes a personal interpretation of an entirely subjective nature, having risen out of personal experiences and subjective insights. Communication, rather than pretense of objectivity, is my end. I do not subscribe to any philosophical system, beyond the ebb of my intuitions and deductions, and do not expect to be criticized according to any a priori postulates, except my own. I do not consider philosophy as a science, but as a chain of basic intuitions upon the nature of reality: the world as I know it.
