Abstract
The fact of existence, particularly human existence, has occupied my thinking much, even from the age of a child. When the time came to select a thesis subject one of the topics considered was existentialism. Until this ·study was undertaken, however, the only notion of what the word meant came from hearing the term used by acquaintances and an occasional reference in a published article. My concept of existentialism was vague. During the last few years there has been an increasing use of the term by theologians, philosophers, and even novelists and poets. The context in which the word was used in each instance so aroused my curiosity that this study was undertaken to identify the referent for existentialism.
