Abstract
Site 14CO3, or Etzanoa, is an archaeological site part of the Great Bend Aspect – a region occupied by the ancestral Wichita people from the mid-fifteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century. This study will analyze materials identified by excavators from the 2016-2019 field seasons as potential exotics. Material artifacts include fragments of turquoise, obsidian, and epidote. The presence of these non-local materials, or exotics, offers valuable insight which allows us to understand possible trade networks associated with the ancestral Wichita. One of the primary methodologies for our analysis of exotic artifacts will be X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). Through comparing the XRF data with elemental markers that are indicative of each material we hope to verify the fragments collected. This case study will provide comparison for other sites in the Great Bend Aspect to have better comprehension of regional trade dynamics present in this period.
