Abstract

This thesis describes a time-division multiplexing system in which the entire information signal is retained as compressed segments. The principle, which is an extension of PAM, has been demonstrated using a multitapped delay line which is scanned by a beam switching tube as the compressor and decompressor. Using segments of the order of the period of the highest frequency, the bandw1dth of the compressed and segmented signals increases over that of the original signal by a factor slightly greater than the compression ratio. Although the bandwidth problem has not been completely studied, it is estimated that ~ channels using no guard space can be transmitted with only slightly larger bandwidth than that required by an ideal PAM system.
