Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to determine the relationship between torque required to tighten bolts, and the tension induced in the shank of the bolts along the axis, by a unique method of measuring the deformation. 2. Scope (a) The scope of this thesis is to review the existing literature concerning experiments or theoretical investigations of the torque-tension relationship. (b) Derive an analytic equation of the relationship between torque and tension in the bolt. (c) Design and perform an experiment to verify the torque-tension relationship equation by determining the coefficients of friction.
