Abstract

We continue our study on the effect of a propeller embedded in the wing under various propeller incidence angles. The current study focuses on the performance of the wing and the wing-embedded propulsion as one system. Three semi-span AR2 wings with different wing hole shapes at mid-semi-span were experimentally investigated with and without the propeller installed. Minor differences were found between different wing hole shapes without the installation of the propeller in the wing. With the propeller installed, the difference between wing hole shapes becomes evident. The circular wing hole has the best performance among all cases tested. An empirical model is proposed to determine the lift coefficient of the propeller-in-wing system as a function of standalone propeller and wing performance. However, the modeling of the forward thrust from the system posed challenges. © 2023, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. All rights reserved.
