Abstract
This prospectus outlines the mission, structure, curriculum, and educational philosophy of Fairmount Institute in Wichita, Kansas, for the academic year 1892–1893. Founded in 1892, the Institute aimed to offer co-educational preparatory and practical education, combining classical instruction with broader training designed for students who might not continue to college or professional school. The curriculum included English, mathematics, sciences, Latin, Greek, French, and German, as well as instruction in music, business subjects, and teacher training through a dedicated Normal Department.
The Institute emphasized moral and character development alongside academic instruction, integrating Bible study and practical sciences to cultivate students fit for civic and personal responsibilities. Admission required foundational literacy and arithmetic skills, and the program allowed for both boarding and day students. Through its classical and scientific departments, Fairmount Institute's goal was to prepare young men and women to contribute meaningfully to society and meet the intellectual demands of the twentieth century.
Fairmount College, founded in 1895, succeeded the Fairmount Institute and operated on the same site. While the two institutions were administratively separate, Fairmount College inherited the vision, location, and community support established by the Institute.
