Abstract
A method of computing the stress distribution in box
beams which are tapered in width is proposed. Differential
equations are obtained for the spanwise variation of stress
in a rectangular panel and a box beam of constant width. Solutions
of the equations serve as the basis for determining effectiveness
factors for the flanges and center stringer. Corrections
are added which account for the translation of stress
by tension in the tapered sheet.
Data from static tests of various tapered panels and
cantilever box beam is compared to the calculated stresses
and close agreement is found in all cases. The method developed
and extensions of it should permit a relatively simple
solution for the most practical problems in this field of
stress analysis.
