Description
Description of men’s wardrobe for male characters in The Learning Tree film used by Gordon Parks for the film based on his novel, September 9, 1968. Extensive costume remarks, described for each scene, are included for the characters of Newt Winger, Jack Winger, Pete Winger, Marcus, Skunk, Earl, Beansy, Jappy, Silas Newhall, Booker Savage, Clint, Harley Davis (Silas’ lawyer), Kirky, Doc Cravens, Spikey, Chappie, Deacon Fuller, Uncle Rob, Mr. Johnson, Chauncey Cavanaugh, Rodney, Janitor Collins, Mr. Jefferson, Rev. Broadnap, Crapper, Principal Hall, Bert Sampson, Crockmyer, Jake Kiner, Judge Cavanaugh, 2 guards, and 2 firemen. In 1969, after years of effort, Parks secured a film deal with Warner Brothers/Seven Arts, which allowed him to write the screenplay, direct, produce, and score the film, and, in doing so, Parks became the first African American to direct a major Hollywood film. The detailed wardrobe descriptions reveal Parks’ attention to the details of fashion to portray each character’s persona, a talent which helped to make him a successful fashion photographer and film director.
