Abstract
The incidence of oil and gas within the Cottage Grove sandstone of
southeastern Kansas presents a challenging problem which results from a
combination of factors. A regional study of the Cottage Grove sandstone
and the associated Kansas City formations is a proper starting point in
an attempt to gain understanding of this problem. By reconstructing the
depositional and structural environments of the Cottage Grove sandstone,
the basic data for working with this formation will be ascertained. The
use of additional subsurface techniques has proven to be an invaluable
aid in explaining the occurrence of oil and gas within the Cottage Grove
sandstone. These techniques include regional quantitative and structural
mapping of data obtained from a combination of sample analysis correlated
with information obtained from electric logs, scout reports, and drillers
logs. Using all available parameters, including gross porosity, gross
lithology, production, etc., these techniques have shown relationships
of production to lithologic ratio contours. Dickey & Rohn (1955, p. 2306)
have shown that in micaceous sand-shale associations (such as the Cottage
Grove sandstone), linear trends of pools are well developed and in many
areas are parallel with lithologic ratio contours. Such a trend of oil
and gas production is shown within the Cottage Grove sandstone and was
discussed in a research article (Calvin, 1961) on the Cottage Grove sandstone
by this writer. This article dealt primarily with the actual
straigraphic age relationship of the Cottage Grove sandstone and
attributed the productive trend to a combination of a facies change from
sandstone to shale combined with the effects of later structural movements.
Significant oil discoveries during the past few years have made the
Cottage Grove sandstone of important economic significance in this area.
As a result of inconsistent structural markers and significant facies
changes within the entire Pennsylvanian section>from a shale-lime sequence
in the north to a sand-shale sequence in southeastern Kansas, confusion
is apparent throughout the oil industry as to the actual age of the
Cottage Grove sandstone, the various names applied to this unit, and
effective methods of exploration for Cottage Grove sandstone production.
Subsurface geology is a highly effective and informative method of
exploration when used to the fullest extent. It is hoped that this
study on the Cottage Grove sandstone will help relate the incidence of
oil and gas within the Cottage Grove sandstone to known geologic principles
I provide a basis for a clearer regional understanding of the
environment of deposition and structural movements, and serve as a guide
to favorable areas of future exploration.
