Abstract
Authors revisit Patricia R. Zimmermann's 2000 work, "States of Emergency: Documentaries, Wars, Democracies," highlighting its enduring relevance in today's complex media landscape. They discuss the evolution of independent media and the challenges it faces amid global crises, emphasizing the role of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) in fostering a counterpublic sphere. The article features insights from artists and filmmakers who reflect on how their works have gained new significance over time, addressing pressing issues such as climate change, ecological degradation, media disinformation, and ongoing conflicts. Through these reflections, the authors underscore the necessity for intentional and urgent action in confronting the sustained turbulence that defines our current era.
