Abstract
This thesis was developed to demonstrate the formulation
and solution of the equations of structural analysis
for the ease of coplanar structures which follow the linear
law of elasticity with forces statically applied. The
development places emphasis on the concept of the stiffness
matrix as a means of gaining a solution to the problem. In
Chapter I, the problem is first isolated and defined. This
is followed. by the subsequent development of the stiffness
matrix and the equations of structural analysis. The stiffness
matrix is explored further in Chapter II and the elements
of the matrix are determined for the case of a typical
coplanar structural member which is subjected to a generalized
system of forces. In Chapter III, a numerical example
is solved by combining the stiffness matrix of Chapter II
with the equations of structural analysis of Chapter I.
