Abstract
Western U.S. production areas are increasingly important supply sources for potatoes in East Coast markets. Producers in Maine and other traditional Eastern potato-growing areas have experienced declining market shares since 1960, as consumers have shown a preference for russet varieties, which are better adapted to Western production areas. Whereas Maine's marketing region has contracted, Western and new-crop potato producers have widened their marketing areas. Canadian imports have also strengthened market shares for Canadian producers in 10 of the 11 Eastern cities examined. However, the effect of Canadian imports on Maine's market share has been much less than the effect from larger Western potato marketings..
