Jefferson Barracks Quartermaster's Ledger Book

Consisting of a series of dated invoices and receipts for goods and supplies issued from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, to be used by military units and other governmental entities, this quartermaster's ledger book contains entries dating between March 19, 1844 and May 25, 1850. The majority of the entries date from 1844 to 1847. Entries from 1848, 1849 and 1850 are very few. About one-third of the volume, not in its original binding, is blank and not included in digital version. Among the goods and supplies shipped from Jefferson Barracks are paper, sealing wax, blank books and ink; clothing of all sorts applicable to military requirements; tools and hardware; materials used to maintain the cavalry, saddles, tack and forage for the animals; a variety of hospital and medical stores; tents; coal and coal oil. From 1844 to 1846, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, and Ft. Laramie, Wyoming, along with various American Indian reservations including those of the Kickapoo, Mandan and Wyandot tribes, received the shipments. From 1846-50, the direction of shipments shifted to the South. Frequent destinations were Ft. Scott, Kansas, Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma, and New Orleans, the point of departure for goods being sent by water to the military engaged in action in Mexico. Among the steamboats mentioned in the ledger are the Archer, Amelia, Potosi, Champlain, Bertram, Brunswick, Nimrod, Omega and Old Hickory.
