Abstract

A series of [Re(5-R-phen)(CO)3(X)]0/+, where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, R = H, CN, COOH, COONH2, and X = Cl or pyridine, was prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, NMR, Vis/UV, emission and cyclic voltammetry. The complexes absorb in the near-ultraviolet region of the spectrum, emit between 550 and 600 nm with emission lifetimes between 150 and 500 ns, undergo irreversible oxidation at 1.45 V and a reversible reduction of the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand near −1.30 V vs Ag/AgCl in acetonitrile.
