Go West for Your Health. In the nineteenth century, the climatic appeals of the Southwest were so strong that nearly one of four of all permanent settlers in the area were health-seekers, composed mostly of tubercular patients who felt that breathing bad air in humid environments was their problem and that the pure dry air of the southwestern plains and mountains would cure them.
