Description
Leffard writes to his sister Susanna "S. A." Beatty and refers to her as "Sue" and "sister." He reports daily rations for the troops are bread, "salt horse and been soup" and also discusses a box of food containing apple butter, cakes and apples received by a friend and shared with him. He says Confederate camps are visible from his camp and "from Signal Hill they can see Richmond with a glass." Leffard describes a battle with Confederate gunboats on the James River. Written from "Camp near Signal hill" [Virginia]
