Abstract
The present study attempted to show that given the need
to succeed, commitment to anticipated failure should create
dissonance, the magnitude of which is in accordance to the
amount of failure to which S commits himself. Dissonance
reduction was predicted in the form of a reduction in S's
goal to succeed, with high dissonance Ss showing greater
reduction, as measured by constant dial setting and lower
n-ach scores. The effects of commitment to moderate failure
were inconsistent and therefore no conclusions could be
drawn from the data.
