Abstract
Three stimulus variables, novelty, complexity, and spaciousness,
were presented simultaneously to ~s who entered a maze situation from
their home cages. A straight alley, which across groups was combined
with each of the stimulus patterns, was inserted to control and to
isolate the effect of locomotion. Across trials the ~s entered the .novel
box significantly more often than they entered the spacious box, and ~s
entered th~ spacious box significantly more often than the complex box.
Locomotion was seen to be a significant variable in exploration. Since
the ~s entered the maze from their home cages, the entries into the
various goal areas were described as approaches toward the stimuli and
not as escape from a novel situation.
