The purpose of this study is to determine the reasons for student withdrawal from the instrumental music program in the Wichita Public School System. While this rate of "dropout" is recognized as a universal problem by music educators, there is little evidence of any significant research into the contributing causes. A perusal of journals and periodicals forces a similar conclusion -- few articles of consequence concerning this problem have been published.
