Abstract
This study of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets is made with the principal purpose of advancing from a first reading of the poems to some understanding of the depth of their content. This involves reading the four poems many times, studying the criticisms, particularly those of Eliot himself, and then determining for oneself how helpful those comments and annotations are.
My central interest, Eliot's use of music in the Four Quartets, is not unique. Helen Gardner in The Art of T.S. Eliot and C. A. Bodelsen in T.S. Eliot's Quartets each include chapters which have been very helpful. My chief source outside the poems, however, has been Eliot's essay “The Music of Poetry," and my method has been to read the Quartets with the essay in mind in order to determine how far the musical analogy is helpful in understanding the Four Quartets.
