Abstract
This thesis is an investigation of wave propagation in plasmas with specific application to the ionosphere. The study is restricted to plane waves normally incident into a horizontally stratified ionosphere in the absence of the earth's magnetic field. None of the theoretical treatments nor the analysis techniques in this thesis represent original developments. The primary interest was to gain experience with wave propagation phenomena in plasmas and with techniques for solving the wave equation with variable refractive index.
Chapter I contains the theoretical treatment of the study. It derives the constitutive parameters for a plasma and also the wave equation applicable to the restricted conditions cited above. Methods of solving the wave equation are discussed. Chapter I concludes with a survey of the "ionosphere problem."
Chapter II treats the analysis of a specific problem, that of a plane wave travelling upward into a horizontal ionosphere layer. A simple parabolic layer is assumed, with properties which roughly simulate the lower portion of the actual nighttime ionosphere. Calculations are made for the reflection coefficient and for the fields, power flow, and electron oscillation amplitudes within the ionosphere.
