Abstract
Victim-survivors of sexual assault face several obstacles when disclosing their experience, especially to law enforcement. Their believability is often doubted because of their subjectivity or performance as a victim-survivor. This dynamic is present in primetime dramas depicting sexual violence. This study employs a thematic analysis under the framework of Cultivation Theory and Framing Theory to analyze themes of (un)believability in the hit primetime show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. This research found themes power, the victim-survivor's subjectivity, the assailant’s subjectivity, nonideal performance by the victim-survivor were present. dispelling sexual violence myths (SVMs) and an ideal performance by the victim-survivor. These themes show that there are negative characterizations of victim-survivors based on their subjectivity and performance. To counterbalance this, the shows often juxtapose SVMs with correction. It is possible SVU cultivates a negative or positive reality towards believability in the minds of its heavy viewers.
