Abstract
The article examines whether -and, if so, how -Czech and Upper Sorbian calque the expression of grammatical relations between sentence constituents on the expression of the same or similar grammatical relations in German. Specifically considered here are verbs with either prepositional or oblique-case governance. While various studies of lexical, morphological, semantic, and even phraseological calques have been published with reference not only to the three languages considered here, but to languages in contact generally, few, ifany, have introduced or considered the possibility of actual syntactic calquing3. Accordingly, this article is intended both as a further assessment of German influence on West Slavic languages and as an initial investigation of syntactic calquing qua grammatical process.
