Abstract

Contemporary music presents a unique set of challenges to its performers. This is especially so for the modern percussionist. Aside from being both mentally and physically draining, the performer must convince an audience, that what he/she is presenting is Art. This study proceeds to analyze tactics used by top performers of the idiom. These tactics include: Memorization of Music, Choreography and Movement, and Oral Presentation. These will be demonstrated through audio, video, and live performance. Although this study is inspired by solo percussion repertoire, it is meant to be observed by all musicians as an aid in their performance.
