    Abstract
The digital revolution has created a need for a new type of professional called the electronic resources (ER) librarian. This chapter traces the development of this new position in academic libraries, identifies preferred characteristics needed to succeed in this position, and provides a rationale for why some characteristics are essential while others are desirable. Using economic, political, social, and technological factors as determinants, the authors further the discussion and ask the question: has this position become a permanent fixture in the library culture or is it a passing trend?
