Parnassus and the Sunflower web application development
Abstract
This project aims to develop websites for Wichita State University Libraries. The Libraries
digitized many historical WSU student publications, including Parnassus Yearbook and the
Sunflower, the twice-weekly newspaper. Parnassus is the student yearbook started by the Junior
Class of Fairmount College in 1902 that had publishing for 80 years. The Sunflower is an
independent, student-run newspaper housed in the Elliott Hall at Wichita State University
that has been published since 1896. The yearbook and newspaper have been serving as the
primary news source for Wichita State and the surrounding community ever since. These
publications were digitized, prepared for Web publication, and uploaded to SOAR, the WSU
institutional repository. The repository interface allows users to search and browse, but it is
not user-friendly; users should download the file in order to read it. We developed web pages
for the library to address this issue. As the result, we enabled users to access these publications
in one place and read them online without having to download anything. The web pages were
created using technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
