    Abstract
The intention of this thesis is to substantiate the assumption that there have been important similarities in the development of jazz and painting during the decade 1945-1955. The emphasis will be placed on the comparison of the avant garde of both painting and jazz with particular attention to the thinking and motivation of these two groups.
