    Abstract
    Purpose. It was the purpose of this study: (1) to survey four recently published fourth grade arithmetic textbooks to discover to what extent social situations were used as a basis for reasoning problems; (2) to ascertain to what extent / fourth grade teachers in first class cities in Kansas use social activities as supplementary material in arithmetic; (3) to present informational material on broomcorn, aviation, and wheat with special reference to Wichita;. and (4) to show how broomcorn, aviation, and wheat may be used by fourth grade teachers of arithmetic in Wichita, Kansas, as sources tor supplementary reasoning problems.
