    Abstract
Following the treatment of oil and gas wells with hydrochloric acid, it has occasionally been observed that the spent acid can be withdrawn from the well only with difficulty due to the fact that the pores of the earth’s formations when filled with both liquid and gas exhibit a phenomenon known as the Jamin action.$^1$ The magnitude of the pressure to discharge a chain of alternate liquid globules and gas bubbles depends upon the following factors: (1) the diameter of the capillary, (2) the surface tension of the liquid in contact with the surface of the gas and (3) the adhesion between the liquid and the walls of the capillary.
