Both are Liberal Arts freshmen. The two women are shown glancing through an issue of the Sunflower published during the years that they spent in the service. / photo by Roberta Paden -- Growing Kansas is illustrated in this map of the state showing population concentration in 1953. State aid was granted schools located in densely populated areas in 1870 and 1900. Since that time, Sedgwick County population has grown to proportions which overshadow other sections of the state. The heavy line encloses a 39-county area. The University is better situated to serve this area than any state-supported school. Section two pin-points [sic] the Topeka area. The third section is the Kansas City area in which Kansas University is located. The rapid growth of Wichita and the increasing density of population in the area surrounding Wichita will be one of the main points stressed by University officials in the attempt to win approval of a bill granting state financial aid to the school. p. 2 -- Garry Mann; Herb Coin. p. 4 -- Pictured above is the 1956-57 Shocker basketball team.
