Chakles, assistant professor of journalism. p. 6 -- Editor: The editor, Cliff Tarpy, divides his time between putting out the editorial page, keeping up with shifting issues and working to get the paper on the street. p. 6 -- Staff: Staff members write the stories, aid with the copy reading and assist with other jobs. L. to R., Myrna Fletcher, staff writer; Judy Fairhurst, staff writer; Marilyn Ruggles, staff writer; Dana Winkler, staff writer. In the background, Cheri Basta, staff writer and foreground, Bill Rapps, managing editor. p. 6 -- Paste-up: Before paste-up begins, managing editor Bill Rapps looks over the page mock-ups to see that all the ads are in place and to try to foresee any problems that will be encountered by the paste-up staff. p. 6 -- Two head are better: Paste up for ads and news copy sometimes overlap. Staff writer Judy Fairhurst works around business manage Ron Opperman as they both put copy on the page. p. 7 -- After: The paste-up room looks like a cyclone, well a small one, hit it. To facilitate faster handling of copy, the make-up people throw all scraps on the floor and sweep it out later. p. 7 -- Bruce Erickson, sports. p. 7 -- Headlines: News Editor Dan Awtry operates the headline which is a [machine that] photographically reproduces headlines of various sizes and styles. p. 7 -- To press: The paper runs out of the Web offset press in Augusta while Editor Cliff Tarpy waits for the issues to be bundled up and readied for the trip back to campus. p. 7
