Nichols on the art of listening. p. 1 -- Careful preparation before flight time: Before boarding the plane for take-off, all equipment used by the WSU and Great Plains Skydivers clubs goes through painstaking preparation. Here, experts examine and pack the parachutes. Besides the regular back parachutes, all skydivers are required to wear a reserve chute which is worn over the belly. p. 1 -- Instruction and reassurance: Climbing to 2000 ft., jump master Joe Raggio checks last minute details with Carol Wilson. Carol is still working on her "static line" jumps - she needs only to jump from the plane and her parachute opens automatically, triggered from a line attached to the pilot's seat. p. 4 -- Ready to go up: From left to right, skydivers Don Towner, Carol WIlson, Joe Raggio, and Sunflower reporter Cliff Tarpy are set to board the plane for the jumps. p. 4 -- Moment of truth: Series of captioned photographs of Joe Raggio jumping from the plane. p. 5 -- On her own now: Assuming the spread eagle position, Carol tumbles from the plane and awaits the automatic opening of her parachute. p. 5 -- Coach Snodgrass "improved". p. 7 -- Way up there: Fred Burton, a junior, demonstrates the form that carried him over the bar at 15-6 in the pole vault in the recent Kansas State Relays. p. 7 | |
