Abstract
The most basic elements of culture which
separate humans from other animals are the
efficient use of tools and the development
of language. Evidence is presented suggesting
that a key mutation for lateral
dominance formed part of the biological
basis for the sUbsequent development of
culture which is dependent upon handedness
for the efficient use of tools, and upon
cerebral speech asymmetry for the lateral
localization of language functions.
