pre-Clovis population of the Plains
[1]
Prehistoric demography, as the study and analysis of prehistoric populations, attempts to generate absolute numbers of peop~e living within a particular spatial area and temporal period. In addition to determining numbers of a given population, paleodemography also attempts to determine average lifespan, sex ratios, and mortality rates for different age groups. Unlike the study of modern populations, the problems of ascertaining the various aspects of a prehistoric population are much more complex and unfortunately have, in the past, b~en treated rather subjectively by archaeologists. One of the purposes of this paper is to look at some of the different methods that have been devel~ped in the past few years for determining population size in a more objectiva manner, if only in te~ms of models for discussion of changes in population through time. Also, the author hopes to point out the errors that have been made in the past by the subj~ctive evaluation of date.
