The archive also includes unpublished papers presented at national and international conferences and symposia. Among current personnel, areas of research expertise include:

  • Contemporary Spanish women novelists and poets;
  • Golden Age Spanish theatre and civilization;
  • Modern French poetry and literary theory;
  • French women writers from the 14th ̶ 18th centuries;
  • Slavic and comparative linguistics;
  • Modern Latin American literature and politics;
  • Social themes in the work of Latin American women writers;
  • Medieval Spanish literature and civilization.

Faculty in modern and classical languages engage in two main areas of research and publication: literature and linguistics, with additional work in pedagogy or foreign language teaching methodology. The science of linguistics approaches language as a system or, from a comparative point of view, explains similarities and differences betwixt and among systems. Literary analysis considers specific works or a particular author’s collected work in terms of speech acts either from a structural or a hermeneutic perspective, with parallel emphasis on historical and cultural context. In each instance, the fundamental concern is to safeguard the articulation between world languages and the world itself as a core value of the humanities.

To learn about history of the department see the report History of the WSU Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures written by professors Judy Berry-Bravo and Pedro Bravo-Elizondo for the university's centennial celebration of 1995-1996.
