This paper considers a coherent (instead of non-coherent) modulation technique such as M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) and M-ary quadrature amplitude-shift keying (MQAM) for a slow frequency hopping (FH) spread spectrum system because recently, coherent modulation has been chosen for a protected tactical waveform FH standard [19], [20]. This paper also presents an exact symbol error rate (SER) expression for the FH system under partial-band tone jamming (PBTJ) and Rician fading environments through analysis. In addition, the optimal weighting coefficients for each frequency hopped interval to minimize the SER are studied. Furthermore, an implicit expression of the optimal PBTJ fraction ratio has been derived. This ratio maximizes the SER of the FH system and compares analytical results with numerical results for verification. The results shown here can be useful for the future design of efficient game theoretic FH satellite and mobile communication system when a coherent FH modulation is employed under severe fading and PBTJ environments.
