    Abstract
This thesis assesses the use of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) wholesale grid state indicator to enable price-responsive demand. This assessment is based on system and economic analyses for using the indicator to manage the operation of various smart grid technologies and applications. The system analysis was done by measuring the total and peak power reduction, as well as power loss using GridLAB-D software. The life cycle cost technique was applied to the economic analysis for different cases of battery energy storage technologies.
