Abstract
The use of dye sensitized solar photoelectrochemical cells offers an alternative source of energy using visible light from the sun. A typical cell contains a photoanode, a platinum cathode and the I3-/I- electrolyte. The photoanode consists of a dye linked to a semiconductor. Excitation of the dye using visible light results in ejection of an electron from the dye into the semiconductor which migrates to the platinum cathode reducing I3- to I-. I- then migrates to the photoanode reducing the oxidized dye allowing the cycle to repeat itself. A light bulb lights when placed in the circuit indicating flow of electrons from the photoanode to the cathode occurs. Photon to electron conversion efficiencies of up to 10% has been achieved. Details regarding the necessary properties of dyes and the parameters used to characterize the cells will be presented.
