Abstract
Covert communication is a useful tool for data exfiltration for potential attackers. However, up to now, most of the work on covert communication has focused on traditional wireless communications. In this work, we propose a covert side-channel communication scheme that allows an adversary to transmit a message to an outside receiver by injecting malicious input signals into a linear control system. As a proof-of-concept, a simulation of the pointing system of a satellite is used to examine the practicality of transmitting a message using such a scheme. Our simulations show that communication is recoverable, although at a much lower rate than expected, and is covert.
